Brewers Take UCLA Outfielder Garrett Mitchell at No. 20

The Milwaukee Brewers entered tonight’s draft with the worst farm system in baseball, and in desperate need of a shot in the arm. UCLA’s electric outfielder Garrett Mitchell might be just what the doctor ordered for the Brewers at the top of their 2020 draft class.

The Brewers have a dilapidated farm that needed a player just like Garrett Mitchell tonight, and due to a kind of wonky first round thus far, they got just that. Mitchell was ranked No. 6 on MLB Pipelines draft prospect rankings entering the evening.

Garrett Mitchell has a 70-grade run tool and 60-grade arm tool according to MLB Pipeline, and while he’ll likely end up in a corner outfield position, he’ll be no slouch defensively. Offensively, Mitchell has a plus hit tool, and led the nation in triples as a sophomore at UCLA.

Mitchell has a sweet left-handed stroke, and has shown off plenty of pop in the cage, but hasn’t been able to translate that pop into games as of yet. Mitchell is loaded with talent and tools, and he’ll likely continue to grow into his power and be a solid top-of-the-order corner outfielder, but it will take a few years of work.
