In our first guest post in the 2020-21 White Sox offseason plan project, Plainfield Matt lays out his vision for the winter ahead on the Southside.

In our first guest post in the 2020-21 offseason plan project we take a look at Plainfield Matt’s plans for the White Sox this winter.

To submit your own offseason plan all you have to do is use the template here (copy/paste) and begin to lay the foundation for what you believe will be the path to success for the 2021 Chicago White Sox!

When completed, save your plan as a PDF and send it to dugoutmediagroup@gmail.com for it to be published on the website.

Note: We will not include submissions with vulgar or explicit language, so let’s keep it clean.

Introduction

This team is on the verge of becoming a powerhouse in the American League for the next few years. Sometimes some big changes need to occur to move from point A, to point  B. My plan calls for some radical changes, but changes that will in the end,  reward the Southside faithful with at least one World Series trophy in the next few years.

Arbitration-Eligible Players

We have listed the arbitration-eligible players and their projected 2021 salary according to MLB Trade Rumors.

  • Nomar Mazara (OF) –  $5.6MM: Non-tender
  • Carlos Rodón (LHP) – $4.45MM: Non-tender
  • Lucas Giolito (RHP) – $2.5MM: Extend (5-years, $80 million)
  • Reynaldo López (RHP) – $1.7MM: Tender
  • Evan Marshall (RHP) – $1.3MM: Tender
  • Adam Engel (OF) – $1.0MM: Tender
  • Jace Fry (LHP) – $1.0MM: Tender
  • Yolmer Sánchez (INF) – Uncertain: Tender

Club Options

  • Edwin Encarnación (DH) –  $12M: Decline
  • Gio González (LHP) – $7M ($500K buyout): Decline
  • Leury García (UTIL) –  $3.5M ($250K buyout): Pick up

Impending Free Agents

  • Alex Colomé (RHP) –  (Made $10,532,500 in 2020): Walk
  • James McCann (C) –  (Made $5.4M in 2020): Walk
  • Jarrod Dyson (OF) –  (Made $2M in 2020): Walk

Manager/Coaching Staff

I would hire Sandy Alomar Jr as the next manager on the Southside. As a bench coach, he has been to the World Series as recently as 2016 and has been coaching in October for the past few years. His fluency in Spanish, and October coaching experience will help this team make the next jump to perennial World  Series contender.

  • Manager: Sandy Alomar Jr
  • Bench Coach: Joe McEwing
  • Pitching Coach: TBD
  • Hitting Coach: Frank Menechino

Free Agency Acquisitions

  • Jose Quintana (LHP) – 2 Years, $14 million: A solid back-end starter who will eat innings and is familiar with this team. He will come fairly cheap and you can still get 180 innings with a 4.00 ERA out of him.
  • Joc Pederson (OF) – 3 Years, $27 million: This right-fielder will be a huge upgrade in right field from Mazarra. Seeing as he hits horribly against lefties, we will have a solid  platoon of Pederson and Engel with Pederson being an upgrade defensively from Mazarra. Seeing as he only hit .190 this past season, I don’t think he will break the bank.
  • Chris Archer (RHP) – 1 Year, $5 million: Archer is worth a gamble as a spot starter/pitching depth on a “show-me” contract.

Trades

Yoan Moncada (3B), Reynaldo Lopez (RHP), Codi Heuer (RHP), Jonathan Stiever (RHP) (CWS) for Nolan Arenado (3B), $30MM Cash (COL): The White Sox and Rockies make perfect trade partners. Nolan wants out [of Colorado], Colorado needs  young pitching and bullpen help. Yes losing Moncada will sting a bit, but Arenado is one of the top players in the game in his prime. His bat is not a Coors Field illusion, he hits just as well on the road as at Coors. He is also a Gold Glove third-baseman who is one of the best defensive third-basemen in the game. His contract calls for $225 million over the next seven years. If Colorado throws in $30 million, that means we will only be paying him $27.8 million a year for seven years. That is a great deal for one of the five best players in the game.

Winter Wrap-up

We will have the best lineup 1-9 in Major League Baseball. Our starting pitching will be the perfect blend of youth and savvy veterans.

Projected Lineup

  1. Anderson SS
  2. Grandal C
  3. Abreu 1B/DH
  4. Arenado 3B
  5. Jimenez LF
  6. Pederson RF
  7. Robert CF
  8. Vaughn DH/1B
  9. Madrigal 2B

Bench: Zack Collins, Leury Garcia, Yolmer Sanchez, Danny Mendick, Adam Engel.

Pitchers

Starting Rotation: Lucas Giolito, Dallas Keuchel, Dane Dunning, Jose Quintana, and the winner of the spring battle between Chris Archer/Dylan Cease/Garrett Crochet.

Bullpen: Michael Kopech, Aaron Bummer, Evan Marshall, Jace Fry, Matt Foster, Jimmy Cordero, and Cease/Archer/Crochet.

  1. This is just about the silliest thing Ive read concerning the 2021 White Sox. If Arenado wants out of Colorado, why’d he just sign that massive extension? Why not just become a FA this off season? Crochet as a starter next year? He’s only thrown a few innings in the majors. He needs at least a half seadon at AAA before he’s ready. Yeesh!!
