Report: White Sox to Sign Yoelkis Céspedes

The Chicago White Sox are reportedly landing the services of Cuban outfielder Yoelkis Céspedes during January's international signing period.

The Chicago White Sox, a team that features the third Cuban-born player to win the American League MVP Award, Jose Abreu, and a plethora of international-born players on their roster of budding superstars, are reportedly striking on the international market again.

Ben Badler of Baseball America reported that Cuban outfielder Yoelkis Céspedes — the younger brother of Yoenis — will sign with the Chicago White Sox for a bonus of $2 million when the international signing period opens in January.

This year’s period was moved from  July 2, 2020, to Jan. 15, 2021, and combined to 2020-21 classes due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

It’s important to note that Cespedes isn’t likely to be major-league ready in 2021, so prepare for the assumed Adam Eaton/Adam Engel timeshare in right field for the White Sox for at least this coming season.

Céspedes, who turned 23-years-old at the end of September, should however be ready for the majors in early 2022. Cespedes is the No. 1 international prospect at MLB Pipeline, and he checks in at No. 12 at Baseball America.

The White Sox have also been linked to Cuban outfielder Oscar Colas and infielder Victor Quezada in this year’s international class. The White Sox will have roughly $5.3 million to spend including the reported deals with Céspedes and right-hander, Norge Vera.
